چکیده

The high redshift observations of galaxies now becoming available from the Hubble Space Telescope and from large ground based telescopes are opening fresh windows on galaxy formation. Semianalytic models of galaxy formation provide us with a powerful tool to interpret and understand these exciting new data. In this review, we explain the philosophy behind this class of model and outline some of their remarkable successes, focussing our attention on the formation of elliptical galaxies and on the properties of galaxies at high redshift. Now that the recent discovery of star forming galaxies at z ∼ 4 has made possible the construction of the cosmic star formation history, which is in good agreement with our model predictions, it appears that a coherent picture of galaxy formation is beginning to emerge.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Two-Phase Galaxy Formation

We propose and test a scenario for the assembly and evolution of luminous matter in galaxies which substantially differs from that adopted by other semianalytic models. As for the dark matter (DM), we follow the detailed evolution of halos within the canonical ΛCDM cosmology using standard Montecarlo methods. However, when overlaying prescriptions for baryon evolution, we take into account an e...

We give a brief review of current theoretical work in galaxy formation. Recent results from N-body and N-body/hydrodynamic simulations , and from semianalytic modelling are discussed. We present updated versions of some figures from Cole et al (1994). In particular, we show the effect of using the revised stellar population synthesis model of Bruzual and Charlot, which results in a much better ...

Cluster Selection and the Evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies.

The K-band Hubble diagram of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) is presented for a large, X-ray-selected cluster sample extending out to z=0.8. The controversy over the degree of BCG evolution is shown to be due to sample selection since the BCG luminosity depends on the cluster environment. Selecting only the most X-ray luminous clusters produces a BCG sample that shows, under the assumption of...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
